About Coach Ben
Each year, The Straits Times Run has a dedicated coaching column in the Sunday Times and on this website to help its participants prepare for the race.
While much of the build-up is focused on helping runners, especially newcomers, get ready to tackle our longest distance (18.45km), the advice is generally applicable to everyone.
This year, we have engaged Ben Pulham to helm the column. Ben is a former professional triathlete who has represented New Zealand at the Triathlon World Championships, World Cups and in the Olympic trials. He is a sought-after endurance coach who has worked with thousands of athletes and many global brands including Under Armour, Nike, P&G, Apple, Standard Chartered, Facebook, Cisco and BMW.
He is also the founder of Coached, a heart rate training programme that helps you to optimise, track and enjoy your training.
Follow Coach Ben as he takes you through a 16-week training programme which culminates with our race on Sept 29. Among the topics he will address are “You Are Fast Enough”, “The Heart of the Matter” and “The Mileage Metric”.
There will also be an #AskCoachBen segment with the column, where participants can write to Ben to ask for advice.
Ben says: “I have been involved in endurance sport for over 30 years. First as an athlete and more recently as a professional coach. I am excited to be sharing what I have learnt through this column and I hope it will help you in your preparation. I encourage you to read along each week and follow the training plan I created for you. If you have any questions, use an #AskCoachBen and I will respond.
